The macrophage produced cytokine Interleukin 6 (Uniprot A0A1U7QW01) plays a key role in acute pro-inflammatory immune response. IL6 also functions as a myokine, a cytokine produced in muscles, and as such interacts with a different cascade of signaling molecules than those of macrophages resulting in an anti-inflammatory effect after exercise.
